2009 Bob Gibbons TOC Recap
Posted by Rob Matera on 05/28 at 11:09 AM

We sumarize the championship games and scoring leaders in all three age groups from this past weekend.

17 and Under National Championship
In the title game the underdog Team Final, led by tournament MVP Dion Waiters, defeated the CP3 All-Stars 72-64.  Team Final jumped out to an early lead behind the strong inside play of Markus Kennedy and a swarming defense.  CP3 made a run at the end of the first half to draw close, then took the lead early in the second half while sophomore phenom Michael Gilchrist was resting.  However, Gilchrist’s re-entry and Team Final’s defensive intensity was too much for CP3 to overcome down the stretch.  Waiters and the Team Final guards consistently beat CP3 down the floor for easy buckets as they coasted to victory.

Waiters finished with 27 points and Gilchrist added 22 for Team Final in the win.  Sophomores PJ Hairston and Dezmine Wells had 15 and 14 respectively for CP3 in the loss.

Thank You to Thaddeus Young!
We’d like to express our sincere gratitude to Thaddeus Young for his generous sponsorship of the Tournament. This money was used to pay for the tournament t-shirts given to every participant--players and team coaches-- at our tournament.

We greatly appreciate this act of generosity by Thad. He was one of our favorite high school players in 2005-06, and was All Star Sports’ No. 8 rated player nationally in that class. We supported him strongly for the 2006 McDonald’s All-American Game. He has since gone on to star at Georgia Tech, and for the Philadelphia 76ers.

16 and Under National Championship
The Playaz built a big early lead and then held off a late run by the Long Island Lightning to claim a 56-52 win in the 16 and under National Championship.  Vaughn Gray led the Playaz with 20 points, while MVP Myles Mack and Freshman guard Kyle Anderson had 9 points each in the win.  Power guard Devonte Grace keyed the Lightning’s comeback and finished with 10 points.

15 and Under National Championship
California-based Dream Vision cruised to an 80-64 win over Indiana Elite-Team Indiana in the 15 and Under National Championship game.  Dream Vision was led by tournament MVP Shabazz Muhammed, who finished with 35 points.  6-6 freshman Winston Shepard added 12 in the win.  Cameron Harvey had 15 points in a losing effort.
